Attention All Kroger Food Suppliers!
Kroger is requesting suppliers complete new FSMA Section 204 Traceability declarations for applicable food items by December 18, 2026.
Who is impacted? Suppliers with items in Meat/Seafood, Bakery, Produce, and Grocery categories.
Select one of the following:
If APPLICABLE is selected, the Packaging Type Code attribute will also be required.
Suppliers are responsible for determining whether their products are subject to the FDA Food Traceability Rule and selecting the appropriate declaration. Kroger cannot determine whether an item is subject to the rule, whether an exemption applies, or which response should be selected.

Questions regarding Kroger's requirements should be directed to Kroger at [email protected].
Dear Valued Kroger Supplier,
Thank you to everyone who submitted a traceability contact following our August request. This information helps Kroger send compliance requirements, training opportunities, and implementation updates to the appropriate contacts within your organization.
Food suppliers must now review the products they provide to Kroger and determine which items are included on the FDA Food Traceability List (FTL) as detailed within the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). For each applicable item, complete the required FSMA self-declaration in the product’s information management platform: Salsify, Syndigo, or 1WS.
Complete declarations for existing applicable items by December 18, 2026. Beginning on that date, the required declaration must also be completed when setting up an applicable new item.
Remember: The FTL lists foods, not companies. Review each item separately based on its ingredients, formulation, form, processing, and any applicable exemptions. Kroger cannot determine whether an item is subject to the rule or whether an exemption applies on a supplier’s behalf, Kroger also will not retain records of exemptions but does require suppliers to maintain their own documentation of such and provide it if requested.
Kroger will provide separate guidance on future ASN 856, EDI, labeling, testing, and implementation requirements. Do not make technical changes based on assumptions or requirements that Kroger has not formally communicated.
Required Actions
Thank you for helping Kroger build accurate and dependable traceability across the supply chain.
Sincerely,
Howard Popoola

We have not implemented communicating our product data to Kroger via the API process yet. We are still utilizing the Product Introduction tool.
For this request, is the ask to update PI or is Kroger expecting this information to be sent via GDSN to be ingested on their end?
Hello @lvanhouten, and thank you for reaching out.
I asked and confirmed that the FSMA 204 updates are not being implemented in VIP/ Product Introduction Kroger,
Those attributes will be needed once you transitioned/switched to the GDSN portal, and the deadline will not affect your items for now.
Thanks @George_C , appreciate the update.
Do you know if we include this data in our current GDSN publication feeds, can Kroger ingest the information on their end? Or will they only take this information via the API process?
@lvanhouten, great question! Following the thread.
I have one additional question regarding the guidance.
The communication indicates that APPLICABLE should be used when a product is listed on the FTL; however, GS1 US documentation recommends using TRUE for this scenario.
Could you please clarify whether Kroger will accept TRUE, or if APPLICABLE is required?
Hi there @lvanhouten !
Thank you for the follow-up question!
Please use APPLICABLE for products on the FDA Food Traceability List (FTL). This requirement reflects the guidance specified in Kroger's FSMA 204 policy.
GS1 US does use TRUE/FALSE, however, Kroger's attribute uses a set of defined values, and its guidance only names APPLICABLE for FTL items. If you need Kroger to formally confirm whether TRUE is accepted, you can contact [email protected].

About your earlier question: FSMA 204 data for Kroger can't be sent through existing GDSN feeds if the items were not previously set up through the Kroger API. I realize this adds a step, but if you want to include this information in your existing publications, you'll need to set up your items using the Kroger API in order to send in the updated information about your items.
@Alex_Ripley, good morning!
Since our items were migrated from VIP to 1WS API, I have entered three items using Kroger API, which already include the FSMA 204 requirements.
Am I to assume that I will add these requirements to new items published with Kroger API and not backtrack to all the items that were previously migrated?
Thanks in advance!
Hello @nancyVigo, thank you for reaching out.
For the Kroger FSMA attributes, they declared that "Existing applicable items must have declarations completed by December 18, 2026, and declarations will be required for applicable new item setups beginning on that date as well."
You will add the Kroger FSMA 204 attributes for all your items.
Hope it helped.
@George_C, thanks for the prompt reply!
All our current items in 1WS had previously been updated to reflect the FSMA 204 requirements before our items were migrated from VIP.
Would we need to republish all the items that had been published under GLN 0011110000019 to GLN 0838016000116 without them being requested by our brokers/distributors?
If so, we wouldn't have any current information on pricing, divisions, event type, Kroger event code, etc. to enter in order to not receive error messages.
Thanks!
Hello @nancyVigo, and thank you for the inquiry, this will help and affect many other companies as well.
Because Kroger is not using the GDSN-related attributes to receive or map their FSMA certification information, the data would need to be added separately again, please, under FSMA Section 204 Traceability (it is a non-GDSN Kroger-specific attribute, therefore no other retailers will receive it).
Adding the new information and Saving is sufficient, no need to (re)Publish please, as any update will be received by the retailer.
As long as the items are fully set up with Kroger (already have an IMF and do not need another one), please leave the Item Submission Reason Code blank to not generate a new IMF request on the Kroger side.
Hope this helps. Thanks!
@Val, thanks for the prompt response!
Please, see attached screen shots showing that there are currently 215 items published to Kroger's old GLN.
Also, the other screen shot shows the FSMA2 204 attributes already entered for all those items which migrated from VIP.
Will that information disappear if I implement the Kroger playlist, which I would need to update again? Will this be enough without publishing to the new GLN?
@nancyVigo, thank you very much for the screenshots. This helps.
The details under Regulatory Information are fine and will remain there, in case they are needed for other retailers.
Korger is only looking for the FSMA Section 204 Traceability attribute shown in the screenshot above (the pictured item does not reflect the data entered by your company, it is a test item) and, if this is set to Applicable, then Packaging Type Code also needs to be provided, please. Nothing else needs to change for the items.
If there is anything we can assist with, please let us know and we would be delighted to. Thank you!
@Val, good morning!
So, if I understand correctly, as long as the FSMA 204 attributes have been updated in all our products and there are no applicable items, we should be okay?
Hello @nancyVigo, and thank you for your reply.
As long as you added the FSMA 204 attestation for Kroger to your items, FSMA Section 204 Traceability, and Packaging Type Code (only if Traceability = Applicable), and saved, you should be all set.
@George_C, thanks for the response, as well your patience and guidance.
I am just trying to be clear if this is something that I need to add to every single item migrated from VIP, but not published with Kroger API since it would include 215 items that were previously published with the old GLN.
Our team added the FSMA 204 at the beginning of 2025 as a FUSE upload, which included all the items we have in 1WS.
Since the migration from VIP, I have only published 3 items using the new Kroger API and I made sure that the FSMA 204 requirements that we had previously uploaded were present. I did not use the Kroger Item Attribute Set shown on the previous post and attached here.
All items passed the queue and were synchronized.
Is this something new to Kroger API that I would need to address every time I publish a requested item?
Hello @nancyVigo and thank you for the follow-up.
Yes please, this is a new attribute requirement for Kroger API to ensure items are compliant with their own internal FSMA204 checks.
Beginning November 25, 2026, Kroger suppliers publishing food items through Syndigo will be required to provide FSMA Section 204 Traceability information for impacted products. Items missing the required information will be unable to publish to Kroger.
Who is impacted? Suppliers with items in Meat/Seafood, Bakery, Produce, and Grocery categories.
We are here for you if there is anything we may assist with, please. Thank you.
It is always our please, @nancyVigo. We are here and delighted to help where needed, please. Thank you and wishing you and team a happy Friday and great weekend ahead!
